She's here

I'm very bad because I don't have a picture yet. It's yucky outside so I didn't want to take it there, and any one I take inside is going to stink because of the flash. She's adorable. Very tiny. Java is more stocky than she is and I consider Java to be petite. I fed her and she ate; she did all her business outside. She could use a bath. I've heard her sneeze a couple of times so I don't want to bathe her while it's cold out, in case she's got kennel cough. She's curious - she broke into the living room where Java was lying in her crate. Needless to say there was barking involved on both parts.

It was really emotional seeing the transport truck and knowing that the dogs are going from bad situations into hopefully good ones. A second chance at a good life. I wish all dogs were so lucky.

One of my favorite websites is world prayers. I found this prayer and I love it:

Dear God, protect and bless all living beings.
Keep them from evil and let them sleep in peace.

reverence for life - dr. albert schweitzer - 1964
Today's the day. I'm a little nervous. The truck doesn't arrive until 2:30 or 3:00, so that gives me time. It's pouring out. It looks like dusk instead of first thing in the morning. Days like this make me want to stay in bed. Maybe I'll bring Java up for some cuddle time before Ste. Genevieve gets here. I hope Gen doesn't hate the rain as much as Java does. But knowing that she's a Boston, I'm sure that she does. I'll bring an umbrella. I keep thinking of her and what it must be like on that truck with so many other dogs, stopping here and there and some dogs get out and don't get back on. She must be scared. I wish we could communicate with dogs so that they'd understand. My plan is to keep Gen upstairs in the guest room, where it's quiet for a day or so before introducing her to Java. I'd like SG to get used to being here a little before she has the run of the house. And I don't even know how I can introduce them when it's just me here? Especially on neutral territory. I just don't know physically how it can be done if you don't want them to meet on Java's ground - how do I get them both to neutral territory without them encountering one another? It's a conundrum.

Change of Plans

Thanks to Tropical Storm Danny, no one is going to the lake this weekend, so neither am I. That way, I can go pick up Ste. Genevieve myself and not have to have another volunteer get her and keep her overnight. That way it's a little less disruptive to the dog.

I looked up Ste. Genevieve and she's the patron saint of Paris. When Attila the Hun was going to attack Paris, causing the locals to flee, Ste. Genevieve convinced them to fast and pray to try to avert the attack. It must have worked because Attila changed course and did not attack Paris. The building Le Panthéon in Paris is consecrated to her.

Ste. Genevieve

We're getting our first foster dog on Sunday. Her name is Ste. Genevieve, she's 8 or so years old and weighs around 18 lbs. Originally I wanted to wait until September to foster, but there's a truckload of dogs coming from down south and there aren't enough foster families for them all. How could I say no?

My idea is to keep somewhat of a diary about Genny (I can't call her Sainte) for her adoptive parents, with photos and tales of her exploits. I wondered if I should blog about her here or if I should create a separate blog. I settled on doing it here, because I fear letting this blog fade into oblivion if I start another one, so I'll talk about her here.

I knew I would end up taking a dog earlier than I had planned. The reason I planned on waiting is that I am going to the lake this weekend while Robert is at a blacksmithing class in Maine. I'm still going, but I will cut it short to go pick her up. Nancy, another volunteer, is picking Genny up in Nashua on Saturday and keeping her until Sunday, when I can pick her up. Another reason I had wanted to wait until September is we have plans to go to Snow Farm in September and will be boarding Java. I can either board Gen at my own expense or find someone to take her for the weekend. We'll see what happens.

August 24, 2009

Something stole my bird feeder and bent the hand-made pole it was hanging on. All I know is that the little thistle feeder is no where to be found and the nice blacksmithed pole Robert made for me is bent. It must have been something strong, or heavy, as the pole is substantial. I'm hoping it was a big fat raccoon mama who did it - they kind of have hands to carry away a feeder - rather than a bear. I think a bear would have gone for the other feeder in the backyard as well, as it is larger and full of tastier morsels. I told you that I hate nature.

Java is feeling better, although she did have a setback where we had to put her on prednisone to get the discs to calm down. She was on a full dose for a week. She's now on a 1/2 dose and I'm hearing pain sounds again, so I don't know what to do. Hopefully it'll work and her back will settle.

We applied to a Boston Terrier rescue organization to be foster parents for Bostons. We were approved and it looks like we'll be getting a foster dog pretty soon. I'm excited but also nervous. I remember how uneasy I was when we got Barney and that was all for no reason. I guess it's the unknown. Will s/he get along with Java, or with the cat, etc. I think it'll be hard to give up a dog, but if I keep it in my mind that if I adopt this one, I can't foster any more, that'll help me.

Every morning we go out to breakfast. I really should stop, but I enjoy it so much. We bring the newspaper, which Robert reads while I work on the crossword puzzle. Robert has the same thing every morning: oatmeal. I have a few favorites that I pick and choose from according to my mood. After breakfast we stop at the local farmstand and get vegetables for that night's dinner. I try to choose the produce grown on the farm (the stand sells stuff that they didn't grow as well), thanks to my friend Amy. The corn and tomatoes this time of year are fabulous. I've really been enjoying them. Today I picked up some NH-grown wild blueberries and white peaches. We'll have a yummy dessert tonight. I've been really loving that greek yogurt. It's just like regular yogurt except it's been strained so it's thicker. It has a great mouth-feel and if you add a little splenda it tastes like whipped cream. At least I tell myself it does.

August 6, 2009

I hate nature. Well, I don't hate it. I just have a hard time with it. Today while walking to the mailbox, I found a bright red feather. Ooh, a male cardinal! I thought I was so lucky. But on the way back to the house I found another and another and another. Uh oh. Then I found a downy feather like a breast feather tipped with red. It looked like the male cardinal met an unfortunate end. Indeed, tonight the female cardinal made her nightly stop at the feeder and she was most definitely alone. Usually she is with her mate, who would sometimes feed her and watch for danger while she ate at the feeder. I feel very sad for the widow cardinal tonight.

August 4, 2009

So yesterday I played around with some off-mandrel stuff on the torch and this morning I went to collect it. I made two pendants. Before I even got a chance to see one of them, I dropped it. I watched it fall, spinning in slow motion, toward the tile floor and then land, scattering pieces of it across the room. Ouch. I think it was probably beautiful before that happened. The other pendant also wound up in the trash because the loop had a little crack. I will get better at making these things and I will learn not to drop them, too.

Java is feeling better. Last night she was perky and moving around a bit more. This morning I haven't heard her snork in pain too often. She's still doing it but not all the time. The other day she did it with every movement. I'm just happy that her pain seems to be subsiding. I took her with me to Dunkin Donuts this morning. I got a coffee and she had two munchkins. She loves them.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do today. I ordered some antique keys to make some beads on. That'll be fun. You then can hang little doodads off the key and it has a bead on the shaft and looks arty and funky. Till then, I have to keep on thinking of what to make. This artist stuff is hard sometimes.

August 3, 2009

I just added up the number of posts I've made this year and right now it's under 25. That's a scant number. I've pondered before on how much detail or minutae of one's daily life does one go into for a blog to still be interesting. I figure I'm down to about three readers at this point so I can post as much junk as I want.

Java is not feeling well. She's had a relapse of her back problems and is in pain when she moves around. This we can deal with by keeping her crated so she can't move around. It's when she is in pain lying around that it gets bad. Fortunately it hasn't gotten to that point, but I'm living with the fear that it will get that bad. It's kind of stressful, having that dread, a gnawing in my stomach and waves of nausea if I've just eaten, 24 hours a day. It's getting better though. I think there's some maintenance of Java's condition and maybe a little improvement this morning. So I'm hopeful. We're still keeping her in her case as a precaution. I think her recent problems came from our having our living room rug cleaned and consequently her sliding on the newly exposed hardwood floor. Who knows? No one can say for sure. We've since moved some rugs down into the living room from other rooms so that problem is solved for now.

I may make some beads today or I may not. I came back from the Gathering a week ago and have been spending time in the studio every day but nothing is really gelling for me right now. I had a lot of compliments on my beads at the bead trading event so that was a boost. Some of my favorites were the ones to go last, though and I'm not sure if it's because they were the physically largest ones or if because they were the less-favored ones. Last year I came back and was a bead-making fool. This year I'm still struggling to find something that moves me to make more.

Here's a pendant I made inspired by a Gathering demo. It's made completely off-mandrel.

Gary loves our porch. He's not allowed to go outside so this is the closest he gets to being there. I caught him in this pose the other day and had to snap a picture. He looks so contorted but yet so comfortable at the same time. When I was on the porch, a female hummingbird stopped by my feeder, so I took her picture too. Unfortunately it's through the glass, but one of the closest shots I've ever been able to take of one.

Happy August!

Here it is, the first of August. It doesn't feel like we've had a summer yet, with June and July being so rainy and gross. This week the humidity is up, so everything feels wet, and we run the air conditioning just to remove the moisture from the air.

This summer I purchased a hammock for myself. I really enjoy being outside, and being able to look at the sky and the trees. Until I bought my hammock, there was no comfortable place to do this. Last year I tried lying on my stone bench or the granite front step - neither was good. I mulled over an adirondack chair, but felt the hammock offered multiple ways to enjoy it, where the chair would offer only one. I can lie down in the hammock in the traditional way, or I can sit in it like a chair. I prefer to sit in it like a chair and rock as I watch the nature in my yard.

The hammock:

A couple of views:

Speaking of nature, the other day I walked into the backyard through the gate in the fence. There was a bird swooping and calling and really getting upset at my presence. I had no idea why, until I looked at the fence a little closer, and found this guy. He had probably just fledged and momma bird was taking care of him by bringing him his meals to go.

I got a new phone! It's so cute. I hope I don't hate it the way I hated the last new one I got. I ended up going back to an old one until I could find a new one that I thought I would like. My requirements were: it had to have a place for a cell phone charm, it had to be a cute color and have a QWERTY keyboard for texting. I found this little blue phone and it's perfect! I made myself a new charm out of one of my spare beads.

On another note, Java is doing really well *knock wood*. We are still keeping the restrictions on her, so her back doesn't get any worse, but for now she is doing great. Today she is loving the return of the sun and celebrating it by lying in a sunbeam on the porch. The other day I caught Gary lying down next to Java, which she doesn't allow very often. I was able to snap a quick pic.

I'm so happy the sun is back out. I took out the hammock and showed Robert the joy of sitting in it and looking at the sky. Today was just perfect weather-wise, sunny, mid-70's and breezy. I could almost say that this day makes up for the last three weeks of rain. Almost.

Thursday, July 02, 2009

Wow, I completely managed to not post in June. Huh! That's funny because a lot of new things have gone on. First of all, I got a tattoo! It's Java's pawprint on my inner ankle. I've always wanted a tattoo but could never think of something I'd want to have forever. I know that I want Java forever, which obviously can't happen, so I'll settle for her pawprint.

Second is that we went to another game at Fenway. We watched the Red Sox cream the Yankees 7-0. It was a great game (for a Red Sox fan) and ended up being a great series. We were on TV, being 9 rows behind home plate. I DVR'd it and I go back and watch the little section where you can see us.

Third is that we spent a fun weekend in New York City. Although it's enemy territory we had a blast. People didn't even mind us using our Red Sox credit card all over the place. We saw two shows: Waiting for Godot and Wicked. Our hotel was amazing and very welcoming. We did a little shopping and went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Saturday.

So that's a five minute recap of June. Hopefully I'll be better about blogging in July.

My sweet cute little car has a dent. Some jerk hit me while I was parked somewhere and never left a note. I have no idea when or where it happened. I'm dropping it off to the body shop tomorrow and I'll be without her for 10 days! *Sniff*

Here's a picture of my press storage all filled up. There are 112 boxes and I have all but 8 occupied. Amy needs to invent some new shapes so I can fill it up! The great thing is the boxes are built so that they will each accommodate two presses if need be. Hurry hurry Amy!

Today we planted two azaleas and one mountain laurel outside the bead cottage. We needed something out there. I think these will be very pretty.

Last week we went to Manchester (along with 8900 other people) to see John Smoltz pitch. He was doing a rehab start for the Red Sox with the Sea Dogs. They ended up beating the Fishercats, which is not surprising. Smoltz did well and I can't wait till he can start for the Sox.

Press Storage

Here's the awesome press storage I've been eagerly anticipating! I am so excited to fill it up but I have to wait for Steve the painter to make some touch-ups so I have to wait. The colors go great with the tile on the floor. I'm really happy with how it turned out.

I moved my photo studio set-up to the bead cottage, on the advice of my friend Amy. I think I will be taking more photographs of my beads now.

Blogging from the bead cottage

Hello! I'm sitting in the bead cottage, taking a break from making beads. It is a beautiful day today; spring has finally come on full-force. I just love it. I just looked out the window and was really happy to see the shadow of the weather vane on top of the bead cottage spin in the breeze. The lilies of the valley have sprouted and some are four inches tall already. I put up the hummingbird feeder to catch them early. I haven't seen any yet but I hope to by the end of this week.

Java has completed her course of acupuncture and is holding steady, which is great. She is loving the porch and the huge patches of sun she can lie in. I told Robert today that I think she's part plant with her love of the sun.

Baseball season is well underway and the Red Sox are exceeding all expectations. The last homestand was fabulous, capped with a sweep of the dreaded evil nasty NY Yankees. I love this time of year.

I'm loving the Prius and I have no regrets about trading in my SUV. Oh and I got my nose pierced about three weeks ago. I love it.

Some beads and some knitting

These are some beads I made the other day. I'm trying to get back into making sets again, so I made a set of Terranova2 rounds. They came out pretty good with lots of color.

And other than making beads, I've been knitting. I've shown some stuff here before but here's some more. This is a pattern I got the link to from my friend Amy's blog. It's a bag that I keep in my purse so that I can go into a store, buy something and not have to use an odious plastic bag. I despise plastic bags because so many of them wind up in trees. I don't want to contribute to that so I refuse those plastic bags. It's more coral than shows up here. My flash went off and the picture I took without the flash was too blurry. I was very impressed with being able to do an I-cord border all by myself!

Now that it's spring, I made myself a scarf! I wanted to learn how to cable, so here is the first project with cabling that I've done. I can wear this next winter.

And here's a shawl/wrap that I made myself. In February I went to a women's group at church and it was held in the chapel, where the heat is really noisy, so in order to hear each other we'd turn the heat off. I'd sit there and freeze! So I modified a pattern in an afghan book by cutting it in half lengthwise. It's made out of cascade 220 wool and it's toasty warm. I used two skeins of different colors at the same time.

I took little Java back to acupuncture yesterday and who was there but one of her regular vets, by coincidence, to observe the acupuncture process. She seems to be doing well pain-wise, but is losing sensation in her rear hind leg, unfortunately. We have her back on the anti-inflammatory drug she was on before in hopes that that helps and she has a follow up with her neurologist on Tuesday. I hope it gets better.

Java's acupuncture adventure

Here's Java arriving at the vet's for her second acupuncture treatment.

Here's the hospital in Woburn, Mass that we go to. They have all kinds of veterinary specialists. I hate to admit how many we have seen.

Here's Java relaxing on the table with the needles in. A few of the ones in her legs came out because she sat and lied down, but the ones in her back stayed. I didn't dare take my hand off of her because I do not trust her not to jump down.

And here the treatment is over, we're back at home relaxing in the sunbeam.

Monday, March 16, 2009

Here's a picture of my new car. It's a hybrid, and I've been getting over 44 miles per gallon. That's a huge difference from my 20 mpg SUV. So far I love everything about it, especially the color.

Java has been doing much better. I'm not sure that it's due to the acupuncture, because she had started feeling better before that, but the acupuncture can't hurt. She goes tomorrow for her second treatment. She did very well last week, only shaking out the needles once. After they were placed, the vet left us in the room to relax. Java did lie down and mellow out a little, which is pretty impressive for being at the vet's office. I completely forgot to take a picture, so I'll try again tomorrow.

Here's a picture of Java in her favorite place: a sunbeam.

Monday, March 09, 2009

Little Java had been feeling great but last week her back (we think) started bothering her again. She makes a little grunt, resulting from a sharp intake of breath, when she's feeling pain. She started doing this last week so we put her back on the medicines she had been off of to try to alleviate her discomfort. Luckily her pain did not reach the level it had prior to her surgery, as she kept up her appetite. That's my barometer for her well-being. If we can coax her to eat she's feeling pretty good. If we can't, then she isn't. She's much better now than she was at the beginning of last week, but she still has pain. So tomorrow she goes for her first round of acupuncture. It's supposed to really help, and I hope it does. I cannot stand to see her in pain. I wonder if it'll really work. There can't be a placebo effect like there is in humans because she doesn't know what's going on. Maybe there is something to it. I'll definitely post her results.

Saturday, February 21, 2009

You know, it's very hard to think of things to write about here. It was easy when the bead cottage was being built because every day I'd have a new picture to show. Just how much into the minutia of life do you go?

  • I've been knitting and making beads. I made a bunch of Goddess beads for a women's group that I was involved with. It was our last official meeting, and they all said how much they liked the ones I brought in, so I made each woman a Goddess bead.
  • I can count on one hand the number of times I've made dinner since we got back from our cruise (and Barney died). I even went to the grocery store on Thursday to get something to make and I couldn't think of anything I want to make. Nothing came to me. There was no inspiration. And even deciding on what kind of take-out you want to eat has become a chore. That gets boring as well. I'm thinking of giving up on eating altogether.
  • The turkeys still have not come back. I'm sure that we'll see them again sometime but for now it looks like they've moved on.
  • Java is doing very well since her surgery. She hasn't had any more pain episodes like the ones she was having that caused us to rush her to the emergency vet twice. Thank the universe. She gets her staples out on Tuesday.
  • We bought her a ramp so we don't have to pick her up and put her down all the time in order for her to go outside. She has no problem using it to go down, but doesn't like using it to go up. She's a quirky girl.
  • Robert has given me the go-ahead to get my nose pierced. I think I'm going to have it done sometime this week.
  • I want a more economical car, as I think the price of gas is creeping upwards again and I wouldn't be surprised to see a repeat of last summer's prices. On the other hand I don't want to spend the money to buy a new car, I feel I should be holding on to it. But would buying a car stimulate the economy, even in a little way? It's a conundrum.
  • I feel the undercurrent of spring coming. I think it's the angle of the sun and the longer days. It feels so good and I can't wait for spring to get here. I'm so sick of snow and cold. I want to see my grass again.
  • My mother, sister, brother-in-law and niece left for a 7-day cruise to someplace warm. I can't wait to hear all about it. They have a fabulous suite - 3 bedroom, grand piano, private hot tub and sun deck. I think the cruise industry has been hit hard by the economic down-turn because they gave them a terrific deal on this amazing room.
I don't want this to turn into 25 Random Things About Me so I'm ending it now. I just thought I'd put down the things I've been doing and/or thinking about that I wouldn't normally post in my blog.

Closeups for Amy

Here is a closeup of the stitching for the first afghan. It's sort of a modified basket-weave like I did for Mini's blankie. Gary likes the afghan a lot.

Here's a closeup of the new one I'm making along with the one I finished. The color isn't right in this shot - it's way too light - it is more of a cranberry red than pink. You can see the differences in the finished one. The top photo is darker and closer to to the true color. I love the new pattern, I feel like I'm doing something really complicated when it's actually very easy!

Oh and as far as being in the doldrums, Anonymous commentor, you are the one in the doldrums. So there. I had to delete my comments because they were pretty nasty. I'm not sure who posted it but I have a good idea who it probably was, so I don't want to be too mean.

Java had her surgery on Tuesday and came home Wednesday evening. She is doing great. She recovered very quickly from the anesthesia and was trotting along on her way outside the next day. She hasn't had any of those terrible pain episodes so I have to consider it a success. I just hope the outcome justifies putting her through surgery. Poor baby girl.

I had my hair done today. It's pretty subtle, but that's a good thing. It's a maroonish color in the back under most of the hair, so it just peeks out. Here's a picture of the back of my head:

Java's surgery

Little Java had surgery on her neck today for a bulging disc. Her back had been getting better and all of a sudden she exhibited neck pain symptoms. We dug deep for an MRI today which revealed that she has like 5 bulging discs - one in her neck and 4 in her back. Poor girl. Since she was sedated already, we opted to have the neck disc fixed. The surgery has been done and it went exactly as expected and Java's recuperating at the vet's. She may be home on Thursday.

I finished my afghan!

I started a knitting project the weekend we went to Woodstock (MLK birthday weekend). The pattern said it was a "weekend project" in that if you started Friday night, you would have a completed afghan by Monday evening. So I've been working on my "weekend" project for 3 weeks now. That's OK. It gave me something to do while I was watching TV. And only my friend Amy could finish that project in that amount of time. She's a very speedy knitter. So after binding off, I spread the blanket out on the couch to snap a photo and who came trotting over to investigate? Java! I placed her on the afghan so she could see and she settled right down on it. She must like it. She's on strict crate rest these days because of a back problem, so I lifted her down. She's not allowed to run, climb or descend stairs or jump. She is feeling much better these days. Last week she couldn't walk! Scary, especially so soon after losing Barney. So I still have to weave in the ends and such, but the knitting is done. I'm very proud. It's the first one I've done that I'm keeping for myself. I love the feeling that finishing a project gives me.

Sadly, there have been no more turkeys at our house. We spread some corn but they haven't found it. The other birds have and really like it, so it's not all for naught.

On another good note, yesterday Robert used his smithy and blacksmithed for the first time at home. The fan in the chimney worked great and kept the fire alarm from going off. He's out there now and I'm going to go visit.

Turkey Time!

Finally something exciting has happened. Three turkeys visited us yesterday and then returned today to check out the offerings at our feeders. I'm not sure they found anything to their liking but they sure came close to the house. It gave us a fantastic view. They are such tall birds. And they stand on one foot in the snow, I think because it's so cold!

This guy came almost all the way to the house. He picked at a few seeds in the snow.

This one stayed outside the fence, but was very interested in the suet that the squirrel was eating.

This one stayed on the fence the whole time, never coming any closer.

Java saw them through the porch doors. She was not too happy that there were these strange beasts in her backyard. Her hackles went up and she bugled at them. It was kind of funny. I think the turkeys could hold their own against her. I hope they come back tomorrow. We bought some cracked corn to spread just in case.

Tuesday, February 03, 2009

I tried to write a post yesterday but I didn't have anything to say. I was thinking about writing an op-ed regarding the cloning of pets, but I think I'll save that for another day. This isn't a political blog, so I don't think I want to turn it into one. It started out being a place for me to write down my feelings, so that's what it is. On that subject, I'm feeling much better these days. I feel like I'm finally coming out of the deep sadness that I felt about Barney's death. Finally. Of course I still have my moments but I'm not crying every day and moping about the way I was. I'm really looking forward to the snow melting and spring coming. Baseball season starts this week when the truck with all the Red Sox equipment heads down to Florida for spring training. Aah.

This is my dad (sitting down) in a glass shop in Murano. The 2-year anniversary of his death is coming up. I miss him a lot.

Facebook

A few months ago my sister Martha got me to sign up for Facebook. She said it was a way for her to get back in touch with old friends from her high school years. So I joined. And I have to say that it's an amazing thing. I've found relatives, contemporary friends, online friends, old friends from church, high school, college, and elementary school all in one place. It decompartmentalizes your world, that's for sure. I really love it when I find a long-lost friend and reconnect with them, even if it's just to say "Hi, I've been thinking of you over the years. Hope you didn't forget me." Robert doesn't really understand Facebook at all. He's a networking Luddite.

Bead Pictures!

Finally here are pictures of some of the beads I've been making. They're kind of organic, with lots of silvered glass, silvered ivory and goldstone ribbon. I love making them but they take a long time.

So tomorrow we're off to Vermont for the coldest weekend of the year. Luckily we're staying at an Inn with a great big stone fireplace and tea in the afternoon. I'm going to bring some knitting and hunker down by the fire, knit and drink tea. Have a wonderful weekend.

Happy New Year (belated)!

I'm feeling a lot better. This whole past week was pretty much shot, what with my head cold and all the work that's being done around here. The good news is that the fluorescent lights are up in the bead cottage. I don't really like the light fluorescents put out, except that my light fixture gives a nice long horizontal stripe of light across the top of my bead while I'm making it. This allows me to see if there are any flat spots, or wobbly areas that need to be better balanced. Keith and Charlie also designed some cool covers for the fixtures so they're not plain bare bulbs. I'll take a picture and post it this week sometime.

I'm still really sad about Barney. I miss the little guy so much I can hardly believe it. I wish he were here (but healthy) again. He was a little high maintenance doggie. He had epilepsy, glaucoma and dry eye, necessitating 3 different veterinarians and 3 different pharmacies. That's more doctors than I have! LOL. Anyway, he was a lot of work and in a way it's good for that to be done with. On the other hand, I'd take him back in a second if he could stay with me forever. I wouldn't take him back only to have to lose him again. Death is so complicated.

I don't want another dog right now, but I can't stop looking at the Bostons on Petfinder and looking for them in the local shelters' listings. It's going to be much easier with one dog this summer. So I should just stop looking. Plus, I don't think that Java, at almost 9 years old would be as accepting of a brother at this point as she was when she was 2. I wouldn't want to upset her.

This coming week is going to be a busy one, but I will try to make some beads at some point. Another thing I need to do is start taking the ones I do make off the mandrels, clean them and photograph them. I've been making some pretty neat ones that I really like. If I don't make beads tomorrow, then cleaning the ones I have is the first priority.

Tuesday I'm going to the knitting store to buy some yarn for a project. I'm going to take the project with me to Vermont this weekend when the whole family goes to the Woodstock Inn. Martha and Angie go every year and this year invited the rest of us to go with them. It's going to be fun. They're going to bring Elizabeth skiing if it's not too cold. The forecast is for temperatures in the single digits, so it might not happen. If it does, I'll take a picture.

So that's about it. I've just been rambling here but it's good to get back into the swing of the blog. Have a great rest of the weekend and dream of spring training with me.

Sick as a dog

I can't breathe through my nose, and it's very red and sore on the outside from using kleenex. I'm feeling very sorry for myself this evening. Right now the cold is confined to my head; hopefully it will not move into my chest. I still haven't taken down the Christmas decorations and I have a mountain of laundry to wash. Good thing there's tomorrow. I think that Arthur the electrician/football coach is coming tomorrow to finish up the lights in the bead cottage and start putting in the electric heat on the porch. I had a wacky dream the other night that I had to play football, and get dressed up in all those pads and helmet. I couldn't understand why I had to play football considering I don't even know how to throw one. I tried to wiggle out of playing but wasn't allowed to. Very strange.
